What is Colon hydrotherapy?
“Colon hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. By introducing filtered and temperature regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. This process is repeated a few times during a session.”
– Gail Naas, president of the International Association of Colonic Hydrotherapy.
During the session, usually taking 40-60 minutes, the patient lies comfortably, covered under a blanket or sarong, on an appropriate table which is connected to the colonic equipment. Without any offensive odour, the waste of the colon is transmitted into a tube. There are two different systems for colonic hydrotherapy; a closed system and open system, the latter is used in Mullum Sari. In this system, the client is in control of the equipment. Water is infused through a tube which as been inserted by the patient. Controlling the amount of water infusing into the colon, as well as the temperature, gives the patient a sense of being in control of their own body. In a closed system the colonic waste is closed to the air and the anus stays open throughout the whole treatment. A therapist is in charge of the equipment and stays with the patient throughout the whole session.
During a session, abdominal massage may be applied to dislodge toxic waste material which is clogged on the walls of the colon.
Why Colon Hydrotherapy?
By eating a healthy and balanced diet, we deliver the engine, our gut, its fuel for a healthy life. But if the engine is clogged and not functioning well, our diet is not going to make any difference to our health. Cleaning the gut from its clogged waste provides a proper environment to absorb nutrients coming from your healthy diet in order to keep the car, your body, moving fluently. The fact that colonic hydrotherapy benefits digestive functioning is based on ancient theories (add a link to “History of Colonic Hydrotherapy). Despite the fact that there is no biochemical evidence, a prospective study performed by Dutch researchers shows that colonic irrigation is an undervalued but effective alternative treatment for intractable defecation disorders. In this study, published in the British Journal of Surgery, patients reported a decreased feeling of incomplete evacuation and an improved quality of life after colonic irrigation. As biochemical research has not been performed for this therapy yet, the exact mechanism of improved absorption of nutrients after a treatment remains unclear. However, thousands of patients reported improved digestive function as well as an improvement of several chronic diseases after a colonic treatment series. It is well known that our gut has a major role in the immune function of our body. When the colon is not functioning appropriately because of clogged waste and mucus or other issues of that matter; the immune capacity of the body is negatively influenced by that. Improving gut health will improve immune function of the body.
Dr. Elson Haas, MD, has been a practicing physician of Integrative Medicine for over 40 years, has written 8 books about preventive medicine and is founder and medical director of Preventive Medical Centre of Malin in San Rafael, USA. In his experience he found that colonic hydrotherapy relieves gas and spasms in the bowel, assists healing of digestive problems and many back and musculoskeletal pains, often caused by pressure from the intestines. “Its greatest importance, however, is in eliminating toxins from the colon, in relieving stress on the liver, and in improving lymphatic and capillary function. When you begin to improve your diet with more natural and chemical-free foods, and begin to eliminate toxins by cleansing and colonics, you will become younger and stronger.”
